Applying for Jobs

I have lists of what I have done in past and present work and I am planning to consolidate them into one list so I have them at hand when I need them. It's obviously important to remember what you have done to help you make sure you can give evidence of how you meet the criteria for a post and to make sure you have examples you can talk about at interview. I think it also shows you where your gaps are and what else you need to learn.

Volunteering

I have spent quite a bit of time volunteering. The first library work I did - in a museum library - was voluntary, and I'm sure it helped me get my graduate trainee post. I returned there after my traineeship finished while I looked for other work, and I don't think I would have done so if I hadn't found it so enjoyable and interesting.

Thing 20: The Library Routes Project

My library routes are summarised in the About Me box to the right and in Thing 10. I quite enjoyed looking through The Library Routes Project, scanning the job titles for the ones that looked interesting and then reading the posts to find out how they got there.

It seems my 'route' is fairly typical. I also got a fair way through the final year of my English Literature degree without knowing what I was going to do with it. My careers advisor looked at what I had done in my gap year (which I realise now was all very information related - I had volunteered in a library, an archive and a museum) and suggested the CILIP Graduate Trainee Opportunities scheme.

I was very lucky to get my place on a traineeship in Oxford. And I think Liz Gallaghe r is spot on - it was a very whirlwind and very amazing introduction to librarianship, working and visiting so many beautiful libraries and finding out more about what a library work involves. As a student I didn't really think about what the librarians in my university library did all day, because all you see is the shelving and the book stamping.

I'm enjoying the job I'm doing now, which has really built on what I did in Oxford. Studying at the same time is hard work, but I think (and it's too early to say just yet, I've only been studying for a month) that I should be able to apply much of what I learn to my day-to-day work, which should be really beneficial.

The advice I can glean from reading other people's routes is to make the most of any opportunities you are presented with and to have a go at applying for jobs if they interest you, even if you think you won't get them. I recommend this. I never thought I would get my job in Oxford, but there is absolutely no harm in trying.

I'm not sure if I'm far enough along in my career to really be in a position to offer advice to other people, but if you are just starting out, I would heartily recommend voluntary work if you can afford to do it. It's a good way to get experience, particularly at the moment where the job market is extremely competitive.

Thing 17: Prezi

Prezi is by far my favourite Thing so far. It's so much fun!

I'm doing information skills sessions soon, so I uploaded my powerpoint slides and turned them into a prezi. It looked far more interesting than the powerpoint!

I then deleted it because I didn't want to make my work public. It's frustrating that you need to pay to keep it private. I may end up making use of the free trial... It's good though that you at least that you have the option to let people copy your work.

Thing 19: Catch up week on integrating Things

What have I gained and how have I been using what I've learnt?

Well, I've started using this blog again and got back onto LinkedIn. I've learnt about mentoring, advocacy and conferences, among other things.

I haven't yet been able to integrate what I've learnt into my daily routine/work, except what I was already using (e.g. RSS feeds). Hopefully I will have the knowledge (and this blog as a prompt is necessary!) to use these skills when I need them.

Thing 18: Screen capture and podcasting

My ancient laptop is struggling a bit to download all the extra software that's suggested as part of CPD23 so I'm going to skip Jing this week. As The Book Gryphon explains, short videos may well be very useful for explaining library tasks and might help teach or reinforce skills taught at inductions. I've watched the demo for Screencapture and it looks quite useful for filming tutorial videos to demonstrate how to use the library catalogue etc.

I was introduced to podcasts on my last 23 things course and I think they could serve a similar purpose. Personally I find visual media more memorable and easier to follow, so I would be more inclined to produce a video of, for example, how to access the library catalogue or make a presentation available rather than a podcast, which is an audio resource.

Things 15 & 16: Conferences and Advocacy

OK, I admit it, I have not done much in the realms of conferences and advocacy, and I must try harder. I did make it to the CILIP New Professionals Information Day and Conference in June, which I found very interesting and I recommend going to find out more about the profession and to meet other people.

I gave a presentation at the Oxford Trainees Showcase in 2010, which was not half as scary as I thought it would be. I also co-organised the Showcase, which turned out to be quite fun.

There is a lot of interesting material that has been written about library advocacy online, and I've just spent a very happy hour reading through the links provided on this week's Thing. I was particularly struck by the That's Not Online! Project. It's important to encourage people to look beyond what they can find on Google because I think there is a tendency head there before heading (if at all) to the catalogue, the bookshelves or the library's e-resources.

Thing 14: Zotero, Menderley and CiteULike

I did my referencing for my degree by hand, so having watched the video for Zotero I can see how much time these tools would save. Essentially that is the main benefit of these tools - they do the work for you, help you be organised and save a lot of time. I can see Zotero being very useful when I start my library degree.

Using CiteULike you can search for articles, save and share articles, join groups, import files from your computer and export files to your computer. Using CiteULike you can do your research from any computer - and being able to sync your CiteULike with your Delicious bookmarks would be very handy if you were moving around. It's a good research tool for librarains either studying or doing research for somebody else and, in using it, librarians would be able to explain it to students and help them be more efficient too.

Thing 13: Google Docs, Wikis and Dropbox

Having already looked at Google Docs and Wikis during my last 23 things programme, and used Google Docs for a previous presentation, I thought I'd use this opportunity to have a look at Dropbox.

I found Dropbox easy to install and use. I've worked out how to share a folder with others if I need to in the future.

Thing 12: Social Media

As well as sharing ideas, social media helps you learn from others. It's also a way of finding out about what's happening in the profession: I found out about the CILIP New Professionals Information Day because I saw it posted on a friend's Facebook page.

The disadvantages are that social media can feel impersonal and, for that reason, I'm not sure if it 'fosters a sense of community'. It's not the same as talking to someone in person. Claire is right to suggest that social media cannot replace face to face networking. It's different. It is possible to reach more people and discuss topics with more people through social media than would be possible through traditional face to face networking. CPD23 has given me access to a wide network of other library professionals which I wouldn't have known about otherwise.

It's also important to watch what you post online. The other disadvantage of social media is that, if you're not careful, something that has been posted online could affect your career. I was not really using social media to help my career before starting CPD23 - this blog had been abandoned - but I am now back writing on it and back on LinkedIn.

Thing 10: Graduate Traineeships, Masters Degrees, Chartership, Accreditation

I am currently a Library Assistant in a FE college library. My first library experience was volunteering in a museum library, which I did because it sounded interesting! I liked reading and books and wanted to know what it would be like working with them. I enjoyed assisting with the project to reorganise the library and helping visitors with their questions. After graduating I decided I wanted to find out more, so I volunteered in two public libraries, did a graduate traineeship in Oxford, and then got my current post. I will start my library masters degree next month.

Things 8 & 9: Google Calendar and Evernote

Much of what is covered in this week's things can be done in Microsoft Outlook - there's a calendar there and a taskbar which does similar things to Evernote. I've saved Google Calendar to my iGoogle page and saved the Evvernote Web Clipper to my browser, so we'll see if it comes in handy. I imagine Evernote will be quite useful when I start library school.

Things 6 and 7: Online networking, face-to-face networking and professional organisations

I joined LISNPN a few months ago and I've found the downloadable resources section particularly helpful. I'm thinking about joining CILIP when I start my library qualification, which will also give me more access to CILIP Communities. I read about the Library Society of the World with interest and I am planning to read Devora Zack's Networking For People Who Hate Networking book because I think it would be helpful.

I'm on Facebook, but I think I will prefer to use LinkedIn for professional networking and this week's Thing will help me rewrite my page according to the best practice.

Thing 5: Reflective Practice

I feel like I've only just got going, but here is my reflection on CPD23 so far:

I have returned to my blog and to Twitter. I have read some other blogs and expanded my collection on Google Reader. I have googled my name to see how I am reflected on the internet.
I've enjoyed reading other people's blogs and I am still getting to grips with Twitter. I am going to read in greater depth and try more things out to extend my knowledge and continue learning.

Thing 4: Current Awareness - Twitter, RSS and Pushnote

I have found RSS feeds very useful for a little while - it's very helpful and saves a lot of time to be able to view the blogs you are following on one page. I use Google Reader and I have extended my collection having completed this Thing.

I have also returned to Twitter and followed a few more people. Hopefully I will now be able to get used to using Twitter and then I will look into using Pushnote.

Thing 3: Consider Your Personal Brand

OK so, as instructed, I googled my name. Luckily this was quite a straightforward exercise for me as I have quite an unusual name.

The first result that came up was my entry on the Oxford graduate trainee blog from last year, where I introduced myself. This is obviously out of date, as I am no longer there. However the entry is proof of my traineeship if anyone wanted to check in the future.

The second entry was a farmers forum discussing whether or not it was safe to burn laurel (as in the leaves). Suffice to say that does not reflect me personally!

The third was 192.com which gives address details taken from the electoral roll. This was a surprise to me as I didn't realise personal details were so easily accessible online.

After another entry discussing whether or not it was safe to burn laurel prunings were my project presentation and handout from the spreadsheet project I undertook during my traineeship at Oxford, followed by my Facebook page.

I realised this blog did not appear, so I altered the settings so that it will now appear in Google.

Thing 2: Investigate Some Other Blogs

There are so many people doing the CPD 23 things course! In fact, so many that it was almost quite overwhelming to select ones to read. My eyes were drawn to the ones with interesting titles, like Library Wanderer, Meandering the Bookshelves, Eliterate Librarian and Random musings of a librarian, almost.

CPD 23 Things 2011

I am doing the CP 23 things course to build on the 23 things course I did last year in Oxford. This blog continues from the one I made for the course last year. I learnt a lot about Web 2 from the course last year and I'm hoping this course will make me more proficient.

I'm particularly looking forward to the sessions on Online Presence and Twitter, as I still need to work out how to use Twitter. I'm also interested in the sessions on Librarianship Training Options and Careers.

What have I learnt from the 23 things programme...
It's introduced me to a lot of Web 2.0 resources that I either knew about but didn't know how to use, or didn't know existed. It's a shame I didn't have time to do the extra tasks.
I really didn't like twitter, but I liked google reader and have used that since.

Week 11: Widgets

I found the widgets fairly simple to add to my blog and to my igoogle page (once I had remembered the right ID - there are so many of them now!)

I think it is useful to be able to link different Web 2.0 resources in this way.

Week 10: Office 2.0

I found Google docs easy to use. It was sort of a cross between notepad and an email. I didn't think there were enough options available to make it as versatile or as useful as Word. However useful it would be to access your documents from any internet connection without conflicting software issues, I would not be comfortable storing my documents on the internet when I can place them on my own computer.

I found think free quite slow to use, not only to load but also to create a document. I do far prefer it as an interface and it is much more similar to Word, so if it became faster I might be persuaded...

Week 9: Wikipedia

I am quite familiar with wikipedia but I had never visited wikipedia's page about itself or looked at the discussions. The wikipedia page led me to the portmanteau page. I think the definition is accurate, although I would take issue with the reference to "mimsy" meaning "flimsy and miserable". Then I looked at the discussion tab to the portmanteau page, where the first point of discussion was why most wikipedia pages lead to portmanteau! I am inclined to agree with this because it has definitely happened to me before. However, I do agree with the general concern about wikipedia's accuracy. As it can be edited by anyone, it's not that useful for academic research.

Week 9: Wikis

I am completely new to all wikis other than wikipedia. I browsed the oxford web 2.0 wiki. I found the case studies quite interesting and thought the page that detailed the various issues associated with web 2.0 valuable. I did find the adverts very off putting and thought it made the wiki seem unprofessional. I haven't added corpus as a case study because there wouldn't be much to say: we don't really use web 2.0 here. I also didn't spot any OULS references in the pages I visited, so I haven't changed them.

Week 8: Twitter

I signed up for twitter a few weeks ago in preparation for the trainee Web 2.0 presentations. I managed to find Sarah Hogg (another trainee). I did look at the lists, but I couldn't see why I would want to follow a stranger, even if they were a librarian. Eventually I worked out how to comment on Sarah's latest post and how to retweet it. I still don't think it's the easiest thing to use (excuse the pun!). I think I'll stick to Facebook...

Week 7: Linked In

I think LinkedIn is a good idea. It helps you get connected professionally, to market yourself and to look for jobs.
I have registered for it. I'm just not sure where my confirmation email as gone...!

Week 7: Facebook

I've had Facebook for a while but I haven't really thought about it from a professional angle before.

The Bodleian Law Library uses Facebook to display its opening hours, address, contact details, a short history, details of the collections and the library's location. It uses the wall to detail changes to resources and opening hours and details of lectures in which its readers might be interested. By becoming a fan of the page, readers can be kept updated of new posts to the wall.

The Queen's College Library uses Facebook to display the same sort of information, but does some things slightly differently. The Information page is almost the same, except The Queen's College has detailed its collections alongside details about its history. It uses a RSS feed for details of new acquisitions and uses the wall to allow fans to leave comments about the library. There are details about accessing the library under 'boxes'. Strangely, events can be found under 'notes' and details of library closure during vacation is under 'events'.
